In my quest to better understand our food system, I’ve plunged into Stuffed & Starved; the Hidden Battle For the World Food System by Raj Patel. It’s one of those books about food and politics that’s not easy to read (at least for me) because once we become aware that the world’s food system is manipulated by a few conglomerates solely for huge profits, it can feel overwhelming. But to me, it’s all about taking small steps. First we can educate ourselves to understand what we our choosing to eat. Do we really know where our food comes from and what’s in it? Can we really change the system?
Well yes, I think we can.
And in honor of Martin Luther King Jr., who is always a huge inspiration for change, I leave you with a couple quotes, and an article on NPR about food and the civil rights movement:
Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.
Almost always, the creative dedicated minority has made the world better.
