Celebrate National Food Day, October 24th

Here’s a national event that’s close to my heart–a day for people in communities across the nation to come together and find ways to make healthy, sustainable, and affordable foods available to everyone.  To find events in your neck of the woods, check out the National Food Day website.  Here in Portland, I’m excited to hear Oran Hesterman talk about his book, Fair Food: Growing a Healthy, Sustainable Food System for All, followed by a tasting of local foods.  This is a free event on Oct. 24, 6pm-8pm at the Ecotrust Events Center, 721 NW 9th Ave, Portland.  For more info: Food Day with Oran Hesterman.

Even if you can’t attend an event, Foodday.org has a free recipe booklet available here (if you scroll down a bit.) And if each one of us bought locally grown foods to make these recipes, we’d be on the way to achieving Food Day’s goals.  While most of the farmers’ markets are winding down–here’s the Nuts About Berries Farm stand at today’s Orenco Station’s market–

the Portland Farmers’ Market is open through December, and amazingly, the Hillsdale Farmers’ Market is open year round!
